Het materiaal wordt gereinigd om alle vervuiling te verwijderen. Het materiaal wordt vervolgens gelamineerd met een UV-gevoelige film.
Een foto met de gewenste afbeelding wordt bovenop het gelamineerde materiaal geplaatst. Het wordt vervolgens blootgesteld aan UV-licht. Het UV-licht gaat door de heldere gebieden van het foto zodat de gelamineerde film op het materiaal zal uitharden.
De aangebrachte film op de niet aan UV-blootgestelde gebieden is chemisch ontwikkeld om het gewenste beeld te onthullen. Voor het etsen wordt het met resist gecoate gebied verwarmd om de zuurbestendigheid te verbeteren.
Het materiaal wordt in de etsmachine geplaatst, waar het wordt besproeid met een hogedruk-gereguleerde chemische vloeistof (meestal ijzerchloride). De oplossing etst de onbeschermde delen van het materiaal weg om het gewenste beeld te reproduceren.
De resist/lak/film wordt vervolgens gestript, handmatig of in een stripmachine, klaar voor eventuele vervolg etsprocessen.
Dit proces, ook wel fotochemisch etsen genoemd, is de meest gebruikte methode voor het etsen van metaal. Het kan een uitzonderlijk hoge kwaliteit opleveren.
